Someone in Bole is looking for what you sell, right now, within two kilometers of your door. They type it into Google with their phone in one hand.

Three businesses appear on a small map. If you're not one of them, that customer is not yours, and no amount of Instagram posting changes it.

Getting into those three is the cheapest marketing available to any business with a physical address in Addis. It's free, most of your competitors haven't bothered, and the people it reaches are closer to buying than any audience you can pay for.

Why this beats almost everything

The intent is the highest anywhere. A "near me" search is not research. It's someone deciding where to go.

It costs nothing. No ad spend, no agency required for the basics.

Barely anyone competes. In most Addis categories, the businesses showing up have incomplete profiles, wrong hours and no photos. Doing it properly is enough to pass them.

It works without a website. For many local businesses the Maps listing produces more inquiries than the site does.

Calls arrive directly. The tap-to-call button skips every step in between.

Step one: claim the listing

Search your business name on Google. One of three things is true.

It's there and you control it. Good. Move to the next section.

It's there and you don't control it. Common. Google generates listings automatically, and often somebody else claimed it years ago. Use the "Own this business?" link to start the claim.

It isn't there at all. Create it. This takes fifteen minutes.

Verification usually means a postcard, a phone call or a video, and it can take a couple of weeks. Start it today rather than when you need it.

Step two: complete it properly

Half-finished profiles are why the current top three are beatable.

The name, exactly as it is on your sign. Don't stuff keywords into it. Google penalises that, and it looks like spam to customers.

The right primary category. This matters more than almost anything else on the page. "Coffee shop" and "café" rank for different searches. Pick the one your customers would use, then add secondary categories.

Hours that are actually correct. Including holidays. A customer who arrives at a closed shop your listing said was open leaves a review about it.

A phone number that gets answered. Preferably one that rings in the shop.

Real photos, plenty of them. The outside so people recognise it, the inside so they know what to expect, the product so they want it. Worth doing properly: Photo Production pays for itself here. Listings with real photos get substantially more engagement than ones with a logo and nothing else. Replace them a few times a year.

A description in the language your customers use. Say what you sell and where you are, plainly.

Products and services listed individually. Each one is another thing you can be found for.

Step three: reviews

The strongest signal you can influence, and the one most businesses handle passively.

Ask. Most satisfied customers will leave a review if asked directly, and almost none will think of it on their own. Ask in person at the moment they're happy, not by email a week later.

Make it one tap. Google gives you a short review link. Put it in a QR code on the counter, on receipts, in your message signature.

Reply to every one. Positive and negative. Replies are visible, they signal an active business, and they're read by the next customer more carefully than the review itself.

Answer bad ones calmly and factually. A measured reply to a harsh review does more for your credibility than the review costs you. An argument does the opposite.

Never buy them. Fake reviews are detectable, removable, and the damage when it surfaces is worse than the slow route.

Steady beats sudden. Five honest reviews a month for a year outperforms fifty in one week.

Step four: the signals that decide the ranking

Google weighs three things for local results.

Relevance. How well your categories, description and services match what was searched. Fixed by completing the profile properly.

Distance. How close you are to the searcher. You cannot change this, which is why targeting your actual neighbourhood matters more than trying to rank across the whole city.

Prominence. How established you appear: reviews, activity, mentions elsewhere, and links to your site. Building this deliberately is what a Local Visibility Campaign does, alongside On Page SEO on the site behind it.

Distance is fixed. The other two are entirely in your hands, and most competitors have neglected both.

Step five: keep it alive

A profile that hasn't been touched in a year slides. Fifteen minutes a month holds a position most businesses never reach.

Post an update. An offer, a new product, an event. Google surfaces these. Add a few photos. Recent ones. Answer the questions section. You can post your own frequently-asked questions and answer them, which is legitimate and useful. Check your hours. Especially before holidays. Reply to new reviews.

Multiple locations

If you have more than one branch, each needs its own listing, its own hours, its own photos and its own reviews. One listing covering three branches ranks for none of them properly.

Sun Optics ran into exactly this across its branch network. Centralising the marketing while running a Local Visibility Campaign tailored to each location lifted footfall across all of them, at 16.4 times ad spend.

"Managing marketing across multiple branches used to be a headache. Awaj runs it centrally and every branch is seeing more walk-ins because of it." Bezawit, Marketing Director

Reem Restaurant shows the single-location version: new Photo Production feeding both the listing and the Local Visibility Campaign around it, at 23.7 times ad spend.

"Our tables fill up faster now. Awaj's campaigns bring in new customers every week, and a lot of them come back." Muna, Owner and General Manager

Common mistakes

Keyword stuffing the business name. Grounds for suspension, and customers can see it.

A different phone number or address in different places online. Inconsistency confuses Google and costs you ranking.

Ignoring negative reviews. Silence reads as agreement.

Photos from four years ago. Or none, which is worse.

Setting it up once and forgetting it. The most common of all, and the reason the top three in most Addis categories are winnable.

Frequently asked questions

How long until I see results? Local results move faster than ordinary search. Completing a neglected profile can change your visibility within days to a few weeks.

I work from home or have no shopfront. Can I still do this? Yes. Set up as a service-area business, hide the address, and define the areas you cover.

Does posting updates actually help? It helps modestly with prominence and meaningfully with conversion, since the updates are visible to anyone viewing your listing.

Should the listing be in Amharic or English? Whichever your customers search in, and you can include both in the description. The category matters more than the language of the description.

Can I rank outside my area? Barely. Distance is a hard signal. Concentrate on owning your neighbourhood rather than trying to cover Addis.

The short version

Claim the listing. Fill in every field. Add real photos. Ask every happy customer for a review and reply to all of them. Touch it monthly.

That's it, and it's free, and it's still the most neglected marketing asset in Addis.
